Jars Step
Simple Step Shelf to Organize Glass Jars
If you store dry foods, spices, or pantry staples in glass jars, you’ve probably run into the same problem I did: once the jars are in the cabinet, the ones in the back completely disappear.
I found myself constantly moving jars around just to see what I had. So I decided to build a simple step shelf that lifts the back row of jars so everything is visible at once.
The best part? This project is incredibly simple and only uses 1x3 boards, making it a great beginner DIY.
Why a Step Shelf?
Cabinets are deep, but jars are usually all the same height. That means the back row gets hidden behind the front row.
By adding a small step shelf, the back jars sit slightly higher, so you can:
See everything at a glance
Reach jars more easily
Keep your cabinet looking organized
It’s a small upgrade that makes a big difference.
Materials
For this project I kept things very simple:
1x3 boards
Wood glue
Nails
That’s it.
Using 1x3s keeps the shelf lightweight while still being strong enough to hold several glass jars.
Tools
The tools I used were:
Circular saw
Sander
Nail gun
This project can also be done with other types of saws depending on what you have available.
How I Built It
1. Cut the pieces
I cut the 1x3 boards to create:
2 top pieces
4 side pieces
The side pieces determine how tall the step will be.
2. Sand everything
Before assembling, I sanded all the pieces so the edges were smooth and the shelf would have a clean finish.
3. Assemble the shelf
I glued the side pieces to the top pieces and secured them with nails.
Using wood glue and nails makes the structure surprisingly strong for such a small build.
The Finished Shelf
The step shelf lifts the back row of jars just enough to make everything visible. Now I can see exactly what I have without moving things around.
Sometimes the simplest projects are the ones that make the biggest difference in everyday organization.
Learning As I Go
One thing I like to share here is that I didn’t grow up building things. I only started working with tools after buying my first home, and I’m still learning with every project.
This shelf is a great example of a small, practical project that anyone can try, even if you’re just getting started with DIY.
If you’re looking for a simple way to organize your jars, this might be a great place to start.
And if you build one, you’ll probably find yourself wanting to make another for the next space too.
