Spices Rack

A DIY Pull-Out Spice Rack for Small Kitchens

Spices are one of those things that seem small but quickly take over an entire cabinet.

In my kitchen, they were constantly getting buried behind each other. Every time I needed something, I had to move several jars just to find the right one.

The cabinet itself wasn’t actually too small — the problem was that the space wasn’t being used efficiently.

There was a narrow section along the side that wasn’t doing much.

So I decided to turn that space into a pull-out spice rack.

Why a Pull-Out Spice Rack Works So Well

Deep cabinets can make small items difficult to access.

A pull-out rack solves this problem by bringing everything forward at once.

Instead of reaching into the back of the cabinet, you simply slide the rack out and see every spice immediately.

It’s a small upgrade, but it makes cooking much easier.

Materials Used

This project is simple and beginner-friendly.

Materials:

  • Wood board for the rack base

  • Wood 1x3 pieces for the sides

  • Drawer slider (bottom mount)

  • Screws

  • Sandpaper

  • Wood stain

The design is intentionally narrow so it fits inside tight cabinet spaces.

Step 1: Measure the Cabinet Space

The first step was measuring the available space inside the cabinet.

Since the rack would slide in and out, it needed to be narrow enough to move freely but deep enough to hold spice jars.

Taking accurate measurements helps ensure the slider works smoothly once installed.

Step 2: Build the Spice Rack

The rack itself is very simple.

It consists of a flat base where the spice jars sit and sides that keeps them from sliding off.

Once the pieces were cut to size, the sides were attached to the base using wood glue and finishing nails.

This step is important; attention to detail here is what keeps everything secure and stable when the rack moves.

Step 3: Sand and Apply Stain

Before installing the rack, I sanded the wood to smooth out the edges.

I then applied a dark wood stain to give the rack a warm, cozy appearance.

Even though the rack sits inside a cabinet, adding a finish makes it look more polished and durable.

Step 4: Install the Drawer Slider

The key part of this project is the drawer slider.

The slider was mounted to the cabinet and to the bottom of the rack so the entire unit can slide in and out smoothly.

Once installed, the rack can pull out fully, making every spice visible and easy to grab.

The Final Result

After placing the spices back on the rack, the difference was immediate.

Instead of digging through the cabinet, I can now slide the rack out and see everything at once.

This project only required a few materials and a small amount of time, but it made a big improvement in how the kitchen functions.

Sometimes the best DIY upgrades are simply about using the space you already have — just a little more efficiently.
